The capability and power of the LLMs is increasing on almost a month-by-month basis as the Big Tech companies leapfrog over each other seeking to dominate this space. Despite their intense rivalry and competition, all agree with Industry thought leaders like Prof Andrew Ng that the future lies with ai-agents and all are developing “ walled gardens” and inducements including tools and grants for developers to come and develop Ai-Agents for various purposes using their cloud services.
This is leading to a very significant increase in computer programmers now focussing on becoming AI-agent developers. In part, this is because AI has replaced the need for basic computer coding ( and the need for some programmers ) so many are now pivoting towards AI agent development.
In addition, it is no longer necessary to know any coding at all to be able to develop AI -agents. Numerous videos are available on YouTube promoting various different “no-code” AI-agent development platforms and there are now numerous courses where non-programmers can learn how to develop AI- agents and other AI-related products and services. In addition, Github co pilot and other Git hub tools allows programmers and non-programmers to develop software with simple ChatGPT type natural language prompts in any language so anyone anywhere in the world can now develop software using their own natural language.
This is leading to an influx of potential AI-agent developers entering from other disciplines and non programming backgrounds. It is clear that a new profession of “AI-Agent Developer” is emerging and that this will be an important and highly valued job over the next decade as the LLMs become more and more powerful and the AI agents and AI agentic teams that can be built, similarly become more and more capable of planning and implementing more complex tasks.
Other older, narrower professions have specialist institutions, scientific bodies or associations catering to their needs and promoting their profession. These are normally restrictive and based on specified educational background plus experience qualifications e.g. Institution of Civil Engineers, Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), British Medical Association (BMA) etc. Membership and entry is normally restricted to only those persons holding acceptable educational qualifications in that discipline
Since AI-agent developers may come from many different disciplines there is no single organisation that can cater for their specific needs. It is therefore now necessary to create some sort of umbrella organisation to support and service the needs of ai-agent developers and to promote the interests of this new profession that will play such an important role over the next Decade.
