Webinar Update

Webinar W007 on Digital Infrastructure- The Foundation that AI Needs was completed on Saturday 4 July 2026. A video on this topic will be uploaded soon to our YouTube channel @AIGrandad999.alanross and to our 10 language-specific channels (e.g. @AIGrandad999.alanross.Spanish, @AIGrandad999.alanross.Hindi, etc.), where there are now over 20 long and 12 short videos on each channel covering the AI and technology disruptions that will affect your country. We encourage you to view and share these with your networks and to ask them to subscribe so they are notified whenever a new video is uploaded.

Our next free webinar, W008, is planned for Saturday 18 July at 1pm Dublin on the topic: “SDG 2 — Zero Hunger: How Will AI Help Us Achieve This?” For IAAD developers, this webinar will map out AI product opportunities in precision agriculture, food-security early-warning tools and agri-fintech - practical, buildable products for the 2.6 billion-strong market about to come online.

📋 THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS

Global | AI Models & APIs

1. ANTHROPIC LAUNCHES CLAUDE SONNET 5- A CHEAPER, MORE AGENTIC MID-TIER MODEL

Anthropic launched Claude Sonnet 5 on 30 June 2026, positioning it as the most agentic mid-tier model it has built- able to plan, use browsers and terminals, and run multi-step tasks autonomously at a level that previously required its top-tier model. It became the default model for all Free and Pro users from 1 July, with introductory API pricing of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, available through 31 August 2026, after which pricing rises to $3/$15 per million tokens.

Why this matters and opportunities for IAAD members: Cost is consistently the biggest barrier IAAD developers report when building agentic products. A frontier lab's own mid-tier model, priced at introductory rates and explicitly built for autonomous, multi-step agent tasks, is worth benchmarking now against whatever you currently use for agent workloads, before the introductory pricing window closes on 31 August.

Global | Open-Source Infrastructure

2. TOGETHER AI RAISES $800M FROM SAUDI ARAMCO'S VENTURE ARM — OPEN-SOURCE HOSTING GETS SERIOUS BACKING

Together AI, the infrastructure platform best known for hosting open-weight models such as Llama, Mistral, DeepSeek and MiniMax at competitive API prices, raised $800 million on 1 July 2026, led by Saudi Aramco's Prosperity7 Ventures, at an $8.3 billion valuation. Total funding for the company now reaches $1.3 billion.

Why this matters and opportunities for IAAD members: This is a strong signal that serious capital now backs open-weight model hosting as core AI infrastructure, not a stopgap. For IAAD developers who cannot afford premium closed-source APIs, or who want resilience against any single provider's access being restricted or withdrawn, this is exactly the kind of platform worth evaluating: hosted open models at a fraction of the cost of proprietary APIs, with growing investment behind their reliability and model selection.

3. GOOGLE OPENS AN EQUITY-FREE STARTUP ACCELERATOR AND AN ACCRA AI LAB FOR AFRICAN FOUNDERS

As part of its inaugural Africa Summit (Johannesburg, 1 July 2026), Google announced that applications open from 21 July for the 2026 South African cohort of its Startups Accelerator: 15 companies, equity-free funding and AI-focused mentorship, part of a pledge to back 50 African ventures by 2028. Separately, Africa's first applied AI lab opens in Accra, run by the Google AI Futures Fund, Google Research and venture partners, pairing local founders with Google researchers and early access to frontier models (applications close 31 August 2026).

Why this matters and opportunities for IAAD members: Two concrete, funded routes for IAAD entrepreneurs building in or targeting Africa: equity-free accelerator funding from 21 July, and a research-partnership pipeline through the Accra lab with a 31 August deadline. Both are worth applying to now- equity-free funding in particular is rare and valuable for early-stage founders who want to avoid diluting ownership at the seed stage.
