1. KENYA'S NAIROBI DATA-CENTRE CAMPUS TOPS 14MW AS GOVERNMENT PUSHES FOR 20MW TO MEET AI DEMAND
- Digital Realty (formerly iColo) opened its new NBO2 facility in Karen, Nairobi on 7 September, adding 6.4 megawatts of IT power capacity roughly 300 metres from its existing NBO1 site.
- The combined Nairobi campus now offers more than 14 megawatts of available IT capacity, with access to over 100 networks, two internet exchange points and a satellite teleport.
- Principal Secretary John Tanui publicly challenged Digital Realty to expand the campus toward 20 megawatts as demand from AI, cloud computing and other data-intensive services rises.
- Officials linked the expansion to critical sectors including financial services, healthcare, agriculture and logistics.
Why this matters for IAAD members: More regional compute capacity, network peering and internet exchange points on your doorstep can mean lower latency and cost for African-hosted AI products — worth exploring direct or partner access as capacity expands toward 20MW.
